Earth day is a day dedicated to respecting and appreciating our earth. It is celebrated all over the world in Canada and the U.S it is celebrated on April 22. In the fall of 1969 U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that across the nation there would be a grassroots demonstration on the environment. A few months before the scheduled April 22 Earth day The New York Times printed an article stating that the earth was experiencing “global cooling” which caused a rise in concern about the health of our planet. Now April 22, 1970 is known as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Some ways people participated to help our planet were organizing protests against deterioration of the environment and groups fought against oil spills, toxic dumps, pesticides, extinction of wildlife and many more. More and more people around the world caught on to the movement contributing and doing their part to help protect our planet.

Earth day 2009.
We are grateful to still be alive.
To walk, to breatheare
the greatest gifts that we can receive!
Our home,
this earth.
Our breath,
priceless in worth.
The trees, the sky,
the birds...
tell us why and
what this earth day is truly worth!
Global warming is another reason why we need to continue to take action to save and preserve our planet. Global warming is when the earth temperature increases due to holes in the ozone layer which is like a protective shield around the planet. The holes are caused by carbon emissions that come from the usage of vehicles, power plants and many other toxins that are harmful. The increase in temperature melts glaciers and destroys the habitats of many animals.

I think Earth Day is a great idea and is needed to keep people involved in helping to save and preserve our planet for the future. I want my children and my children’s children to be able to have the same earth with all its wonders still perfect and unharmed by the damage we in the past have caused.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtfully committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
By Margaret Mead
Everyday there are little things we can do to help our planet like recycling and riding a bike occasionally instead of driving everywhere.

P i c t u r e T h i s

This is a picture we took to recreate a scene from the novel Holes. In this scene, while digging their daily holes, Stanley and Zero find a mysterious gold lipstick container with the initials K.B inscribed on the side. Though to anyone else what the boys found might just be old junk, but that little piece of junk caused a huge mess for them and everyone else around them.
I first read this book in grade 6. I loved it and I have read it countless times since. I've read and loved too many books to choose my favorite but Holes is definitely a book that stands out to me. It is filled with adventure, irony and has many twists and turns. The story line is unique and different from anything else. The story begins when a boy named Stanley Yelnats gets caught at the wrong place at the wrong time (all thanks to his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather") and is faced with the choice of either being sent to jail or spending a few months at Camp Green Lake. Without knowing it's history, Camp Green Lake may sound like a wonderful place to go, but in actuality, jail would have been the better choice for Stanley.
